Let's practice our speaking skills

Hi everyone! Today I'm gonna share with you an activity I love to use in English class for my students to practice their speaking abilities. It's an activity based on a Spanish game named "Los lobos de Castronegro" (Castronegro's wolves). In this game, the teacher assumes a narrator role, and each students gets assigned a card with a concrete role to develop through the game.

There's two phases: night and day. During the night, the wolves will wake up and kill a villager, and during the day the rest of the village need to identify and kill the wolves through a voting system. If we want to use this activity to practice our speaking, we need to make mandatory for the players to speak in English all the time. There's also a few rules students need to follow:

  • In the night everybody will be asleep (no cheating).
  • The narrator will wake up different characters that will do some actions (Wolves kill, Cupid link the lovers, Witch use a potion...). When the narrator asks you something, don't be noisy - point at the person, but be quiet.
  • During the day, everybody will discuss what happened, and vote for a person to die (majority wins).
  • The identity of the character will be revealed after death.
  • Your goal is to make your team win (Team 1 - Wolves / Team 2 - Villagers).
  • The game finishes when all the wolves are dead, or all the villagers are dead.
Also, it's important to know that there are different villagers with special abilities they can use during the game. Here's a little summary of them:
